I have been working lately on helping my friends get their websites ranked at the top of the search engines for their local market keywords, and had incredible luck the past few months. A lot of the good fortune comes from getting rid of their useless domain names in favor of keyword-rich domains. After that, I make sure that I don't have individual pages on their sites competing with other pages on their domains for the same key phrases.
Once the basic on-site optimization is done, I have been using three really cool SEO software applications to research their keywords, spy on the competition to analyze their backlinking strategies, and then drop links all over the net on high authority, keyword relevant domains, web 2.0 properties, and social profiles that allow anchor text links.
One of my clients / friends has just been so happy about the skyrocketing rankings and conversion rates, that he sent me a cash tip, saying he got three calls this week, and every single call turned into a sale. This is all from using the strategies above, and a little bit of help from my tools. If you are curious about what I am using, I will happily share it with you, because I am thrilled by the results we have been getting. Just send me a note over at my contact page on Webovator.com and I will email you back with something that might completely change the way you do your site's SEO... I have also been working on a book to teach local business owners about local search optimization. You can download a free chapter of it over at Fidelity Marketing, when you sign up for the SEO Zombies newsletter :)

The Best Way to Increase Search Engine Placement
After you have done all of your on-site optimization, you need a steady supply of backlinks. This is the best way to boost your traffic. Of course the cliche is "content is king." If you create articles, videos, etc., that are interesting, informative, and valuable, then people will naturally want to link to your site, right?
Yes and no. If you create valuable content but no one knows it exists, then they won't know to link to it. So it becomes a chicken and egg situation. You need traffic, to build links, to get more traffic.
Here are some easy ways to get free organic, SEO traffic:
Create a blog on your niche. Update it regularly (at least once a week). Post each article's URL in your Twitter Stream. Join a retweet club. Get those team members to retweet your link to their followers. Leave relevant, comments or write a guest article on other blogs, trade blogroll spots with those that you read regularly. Write additional articles (unique ones) and distribute those articles to hundreds of free article directories, with a link back to your site. Make a video, and submit it to the top video sharing sites, with a backlink there, as well.
The main thing is that you need to get more inbound links to your site. Reciprocal links are not as valuable as one-way links, but they are easier to get, and every little bit helps. Try to get links from sites that are on topics similar to yours, and make sure your main keywords are used as the linking text.
This, in a nutshell, is the easiest way to build traffic to your new site. If you have any questions, or would like a little help jumpstarting your traffic and link building campaign, feel free to ask me.

Example of Long Tail Keywords
On one of my other blogs, I posted a link to Ed Bassmaster's Youtube clip where he does the Robot in a department store with a hidden camera, while asking an employee questions. It's a really funny video, which I though my readers would enjoy.
The point of this blog is to show you that LONG TAIL keywords (any phrases with 4 or more words) are very easy to rank with, and get the number one spot.
If you do a search on Google right now, fore Ed Bassmaster, my site is nowhere near the first page.
Now do a search instead for "Ed Bassmaster Doing the Robot" and you will see that my personal blog ranks number one for that keyword. (Do not type the quotes.)
It is interesting to me that my blog, which is more about the life of a designer, ranks number one for that keyword phrase. It is higher than the actual Youtube URL, because the keyword matches exactly.
What can we learn from this? It is easy to get traffic if you have content, because long tail keywords offer you a chance to rise to the top of the SERPs, if your audience uses a search query that is an exact phrase match. Granted, the search volume is smaller, but since there is so LITTLE competition, it is still worth the effort to try to rank for LTKW's.
Here is my blog entry, if you want to watch the video now. It's really funny.

Kickass Link Building Strategy
I am blogging tonight from my email, so forgive me if this entry lacks proper formatting. I just wanted to alert you to something that for me hit the nail on the head for effective, (dare I say it?) Kickass Link Building strategy. Here is the inspiration for the latest Webovater blog article, and excerpt from Eric Ward:
Blogs, Social Linkers, Bookmarkers and Key Influencers. There are bloggers out there who will write about your site (and link to it) This is much different than blog comment spam. For example, One of my clients was a large family magazine publisher that launched a web site about Halloween costumes. I found over 50 Blogs about Halloween. When I contacted those Blog owners and alerted them to the new site, every one of them linked to it. Repeat: Every one of the Blogs linked to my client's Halloween site. They are not links for engines and rankings, they are links seen by people in the exact place they'd be most interested in them.
You might be having a lightbulb turn on above your head. For the rest of MY reaction and a summary of what I learned from Eric, check out Webovater's latest SEO tip for noobs, about Kickass Link Building

Testing out the remote blogging feature
I am so Star Trek, or whatever else is currently cool, and futuristic.
Does this really work?
I can't believe it. Who would have ever thought, back in 1981, that someday we'd be able to update our blogs without even logging in, via EMAIL? It's absurd! Am I the only one who notices these things, I feel like I'm taking CRAZY PILLS!
